Harmonix announces a pretty big win in the land of plastic guitars this week, with the first of what seems to be several albums by guitar god Jimi Hendrix.
The first album to be playable on Rock Band is Jimi’s second, Axis: Bold as Love from 1967. It’s without the first track, “EXP”, not surprising as it’s more radio drama than song. The rest is all here though, fully remastered and very exciting.
AND. And. We’re also getting the new Hendrix single “Valleys of Neptune” from his posthumous album of the same name released earlier this month.
If you’re anything like my mother, when you heard it was Axis your response was “Aww.” It’s not Are You Experienced?, true, but I think they went the smart route with this. As lifted from the Rolling Stone article I linked above:
A lot of people are familiar with the singles [on Axis], but the concept of the album has kind of evaporated from the minds of certain demography over the past decade or so, and so people are cherry-picking songs. Axis may benefit from getting this highlighting and taken together.
I think that’s a fair assessment. With Experienced? and Electric Ladyland people are more likely to stick with their tried and true favourites and gloss over the rest. For the most part however, Axis lacks that immediate name attention, thus prompting more careful consideration and potentially leading to people simply downloading the album in total for the full Jimi Hendrix … uhm, experience.
