Rock Band DLC

The DLC announcement is a bit early this week, but provides a nice symmetry as Paul McCartney brought us into 2010 and he’ll also play us out.

Paul McCartney – “Maybe I’m Amazed
Paul McCartney & Wings – “Band on the Run
Paul McCartney & Wings – “Helen Wheels
Paul McCartney & Wings – “Let Me Roll It” +
Inhabited – “Open My Eyes
Siouxsie and The Banshees – “Cities in Dust” +

+ = pro-guitar/bass chart available

No in-depth reviews of the songs this time (at least not yet) as the holidays are running me ragged. But here are some quick thoughts:

I really dislike “Maybe I’m Amazed” (though I admit to being a little tempted for the piano). Still it wasn’t “Wonderful Christmastime” and that’s a very important truth.

I got all excited about “Band on the Run” … then remembered we already had a live version, and it’s a really good live version at that. Then I remembered that it’s Rock Band 3 and we’ll have keys and harmonies. If you don’t have the song yet, I can definitely say to pick it up. If, like me, you already have one version though, then you’ll probably have to weigh up if you’d “update” it. I’m of two minds myself, and may wait for charts.

“Let Me Roll It” always sounds to me like McCartney doing a Lennon song. The super-reverb on the vocals probably doesn’t hurt that.

I do not know Inhabited; wiki calls them a Christian rock band from Texas. Won’t let the label deter me though and will check the song out later.

Siouxsie is incredible and so is “Cities in Dust”. Get it get it get it.

And that does us for Rock Band DLC in 2010!

Also today Harmonix announced the results of their purchase – as was announced a few months ago, Viacom/MTV put HMX up for sale. Today they revealed that, for all intents and purposes, they have returned to their indie roots and own themselves. Check the press release here. It’s the best of all possible outcomes, and I can’t wait to see what they have for us in 2011.

The Inhabited song sounds like it has potential. I didn’t actually listen to the words, though. Hopefully not another “Jesus Freak” scenario.
