Rogue (fuck yeah!) logo

When I picked up my first X-Men comic back in the 80s, I quickly realized one thing: Rogue is bloody awesome. It is truth. It is law.

Every Wednesday I will share with you a moment, a panel, a scene, that proves it.

Because: Rogue. FUCK YEAH.

It’s been several months since Xavier forced the X-Men to accept Rogue on the team. Just because she tried to kill them a few times and ambushed and permanently brainwiped their friend Carol, they’re all pissy and unaccepting and shit. But fuck them because Rogue keeps trying anyway.

Then Colossus gets attacked and is totally fucked unless someone can get him unstuck so he can be healed. Gee, wonder who can do that?

Uncanny #179: Rogue about to take one for the team.

Yeah Xavier won't be able to do shit for you, don't be too appreciative yet.

But what’s going on with Colossus? Claremont thought you might ask that, 27 years after the book was published, so he’s straight up telling you in this bitch.

Uncanny #179: We thank you, O Claremont, God of Exposition.

Uncanny #179: Rogue's not having a great day either.

Guess what? The answer was not 'all shiny steel like he's supposed to be'.

Despite constantly trying to be accepted and rejected, hated by her own team when she’s at her most unstable and vulnerable, Rogue still puts herself through this for Peter because IT’S THE RIGHT FUCKING THING TO DO.

And finally, she’s earned the thing she needs most: a family.

Uncanny #179: Rogue finally proves herself to the X-Men.

Mohawk Storm decrees it so!

Rogue. Absorbing your pain because she can take that shit. FUCK YEAH.

From Uncanny X-Men #179 by Chris Claremont and John Romita, Jr.

    Meanwhile, in a nearby panel:

Illyana: Brother is really fucked up and will probably die. Everyone is so sad. I should feel sad but my soul is too corrupted. I wonder how they would feel if I chose this time to reveal I’ve usurped Belasco’s powers and go and rip out the souls of the people who did this to Piotr. Hm. Must ponder.

      Oh Yana. <3

They really didn’t have her powers figured out back in the day, did they? I guess it makes sense since she was still a fairly new character. I mean, she absorbs people’s abilities, rendering them temporarily powerless, so I get why she would touch him to save him. But it really makes no sense that she would take on the effect that was caused by an outside stimulus.

Except, you know, that Claremont wanted the X-men to love Rogue as much as we do. :)

True, true. Hm. Could get around that by saying Peter’s pain was so intense that it overwhelmed Rogue. It wouldn’t be PHYSICAL of course (which her frozen position seems to indicate), but the mind is a powerful thing!
