Just as I finish up my Rogue (fuck yeah!) for the week, I see the next announcement from Marvel on the post-Schism state of the X-Men. It’s a teaser for the new line-up for X-Men Legacy! Yay! Rogue’s front and center! Yay! Mike Carey’s final arc begins here! Ya– WUT.
I’ve spent no small amount of time in the past few years proclaiming Mike Carey the second coming of Claremont (meant in all the good ways and none of the bad). Mike Carey is without a doubt the single best writer in the X-stable, and I have loved every single issue of every single book he’s touched. I could happily read him on X-Men from now until the end of all things.
I just didn’t expect the end of all things would be so soon.
To say that I’m upset is an understatement. As I said on Twitter just after reading, “I feel like someone just marched into my house, punched me in the face, kicked my teddy bear across the room and left with all my candy.” While my “skills” are non-existent, here is what’s going on in my head right now:
I don’t know what this means for Carey’s relationship with the books. I don’t know if this is an amicable reshuffling or editorial mandate. All we know is that the end I never wanted to see is just over the horizon.
And I am sad.
